Headless WordPress or Sanity for your Next.js site?
, 5 min read
When keeping WordPress as a headless CMS makes sense, and when moving to Sanity is the better long-term choice.
Once you decide to use Next.js for speed, the next question is where your content lives. The two common options are headless WordPress and Sanity.
Headless WordPress
- Your team keeps the WordPress dashboard they know
- Less content migration work up front
- You still host, update and secure WordPress
- Page-builder content doesn’t transfer cleanly to a new front end
Sanity
- Hosted for you: no servers, updates or security patches
- Content is structured, so it’s easy to reuse across pages and channels
- Live preview, real-time collaboration and version history
- Free plan covers most small and medium business sites
Our rule of thumb
Choose headless WordPress if your editors are deeply attached to it or you depend on specific plugins. Choose Sanity for everything else: it removes the maintenance that made WordPress painful in the first place.
