Shopify vs WooCommerce for selling online in India
, 6 min read
Fees, payment gateways, GST, shipping and ease of use: which platform suits an Indian online store?
Both Shopify and WooCommerce run successful Indian stores. The right choice depends on your budget, product count and how hands-on you want to be.
Running costs
Shopify charges a monthly subscription and, unless you use Shopify Payments where available, an extra transaction fee on some plans. WooCommerce is free software, but you pay for hosting, some extensions and maintenance. Check current Shopify pricing for India before deciding, as plans change.
Payments and COD
Both support Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree and other Indian gateways, with UPI, cards, net banking and cash on delivery.
GST and shipping
Both can generate GST invoices with apps or plugins, and both connect to Shiprocket, Delhivery and similar aggregators.
Ease of use
Shopify is easier for non-technical owners and very reliable during sales. WooCommerce offers more control and customisation but needs someone to look after updates and security.
Quick guide
- Choose Shopify if you want to focus on selling, not on technology.
- Choose WooCommerce if you already have a WordPress site or want no platform fee and full control.
